FAER Activities at the ASA Annual Meeting —

Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER)
is pleased to join ASA for the Society’s 2004
Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 23-27.
FAER and the other ASA foundations play small but
important roles in bringing the convention attendees
the latest news and developments from their respective
areas.
The following list covers FAER’s planned events
and participation for the 2004 Annual Meeting. Please
feel free to stop by the FAER booth in the ASA Resource
Center, Halls C3-C4, for more information and itineraries.

FAER Booth Activities at ASA — Visit Often
The FAER booth will contain descriptions of the various
FAER programs including:
1. Photos and project descriptions of the 19 current
FAER award recipients.
2. Recent changes in the FAER grant structures,
including increased dollar amounts and mentor stipends.
3. FAER’s participation in ASA’s centennial
celebration.
4. A description of the fourth Honorary Research
Lecture.
5. An update on the FAER panel “Reaping the
Rewards of Research — Turning Great Ideas
Into Marketable Products.”
6. A 10-minute video clip describing the importance
of FAER in the anesthesiology community.
7. An acknowledgement of the new Academy of Anesthesia
Mentors.
8. Information on the new FAER Councils on Research
in four areas:
Pain Research Council
Pediatric Research Council
Geriatrics Research Council
Critical Care and Trauma Research Council
Stop by the FAER booth for information on any of
these items.
Friday, October 22
The organizational meeting of the Academy of Anesthesia
Mentors will take place on Friday, October 22, from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Riviera Hotel Capri Room 114.
The FAER Resident Scholar program expands this year
when a third of the residents arrive a day early to
attend the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA)
program on Friday.
The FAER/Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation Recognition
Dinner will be held Friday evening at the Bellagio.
Saturday, October 23
The 7 a.m. Saturday orientation breakfast for Resident
Scholars will include a welcome by ASA President Roger
W. Litwiller, M.D., and brief talks by representatives
from FAER, ASA, the Resident Component and other program
supporters. The scholars attend refresher courses.
The Saturday noon Luncheon for Friends of the Foundation,
FAER Award Recipients and Corporate Partners will
be chaired by Joanne M. Conroy, M.D. The discussion
topic is “Principles of Invention and Product
Development.” The speakers include:
• Richard J. Melker, M.D., Physician Inventor:
“Working With Industry to Develop and Commercialize
Your Medical Device.”
• Bruce Gingles, Vice-President, Cook Critical
Care: “Development and Post-Market Responsibility
for Industry and Inventors.”
• Peter Yonkman, J.D., general counsel: “Non-Disclosure
Agreements, Patents and Licensing: What Every Inventor
Should Know.”
Sunday, October 24
The scholars attend refresher courses and the House
of Delegates meeting.
Monday, October 25
ASA members and guests are urged to visit the second
annual Celebration of Research immediately following
the Emery A. Rovenstine Memorial Lecture.
On Monday, the scholars’ program includes the
Celebration of Research Honorary Research lecturer
David C. Warltier, M.D., Ph.D., who will discuss “Protection
Against Ischemia and Perfusion Injury.”
The residents next go to the FAER panel discussion
“Reaping the Fruits of Research,” moderated
by Sean K. Kennedy, M.D. The panel presenters are:
• Warren M. Zapol, M.D., Massachusetts General
Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
• Steven L. Shafer, M.D., Stanford University
School of Medicine, Stanford, California
• Joseph G. Reves, M.D., Medical University
of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina
• Charles H. McLesky, M.D., Abbott Laboratories,
Abbott Park, Illinois.
Tuesday, October 26
The scholars program closes with a dinner Tuesday
night attended by the ASA officers and FAER board
members. Sponsorship of the program is shared by Abbott
Laboratories, FAER and SEA.
