for Anesthesiologists
ormer president William J. Clinton’s anesthesiologists
and specialists have received media attention in
outlets across the country and abroad for his coronary
bypass surgery, which occurred in September 2004.
His physicians included ASA member Robert E. Kelly,
M.D., who made an appearance on NBC’s “Today.”
Postoperative cognitive dysfunction was subsequently
addressed due to the connection some research has
raised between the two procedures. Articles that
discussed this association appeared in the Boston
Globe, the Baltimore Sun, Newsday
and the Houston Chronicle. Research by
Mark F. Newman, M.D., was cited in all of the articles.

n article published in the September 2004 journal
Anesthesia & Analgesia by Tong J. Gan,
M.D., has led to media coverage of his research
on acupuncture to ease postoperative nausea. Many
major daily newspapers ran articles about his study,
including the Chicago Sun-Times, Los
Angeles Times, UPI and the Seattle
Post Intelligencer.

Alert Gets Presidential Treatment
004 ASA President Roger W. Litwiller, M.D., participated
in a press conference with health care media regarding
the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organization’s Sentinel Event Alert on intraoperative
awareness in October 2004. An excerpt of his talk
can be found on the “Member’s Only”
page of the ASA Web site. News articles on the alert
were published by the Associated Press and USA
Today.

n August 2004, research by Sebastian Schulz-Stubner,
M.D., on hypnosis to ease chronic pain was covered
by the Ivanhoe Broadcast news wire. His work also
has piqued the interest of ScienCentral News, which
is in the production process of a video on the topic
that would be distributed to various television
stations.

was featured in a September 2004 St. Paul, Minnesota,
Pioneer Press article. Dr. Boosalis is
part of an effort to provide resources and support
to local military families with deployed soldiers.

Anesthesia in Geriatric Patients Discussed
ational Public Radio’s All Things Considered
covered a conference organized by David M. Gaba,
M.D., in September 2004. Anesthesiologists and physicians
from other specialties gathered to question the
possibility of general anesthesia causing death
in geriatric patients during or immediately after
surgery. The program discussed research by Terri
G. Monk, M.D., and included an interview with Steffen
E. Meiler, M.D.
