From the Headlines

ince its very first days, the ASA NEWSLETTER has been an important communication tool among the various members, officers, volunteers and countless others associated with anesthesiology and medicine.

Looking through the newsletter, from its beginnings as a type-written, stapled booklet in 1936 to the glossy color pages of today, one is reminded of the adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

The NEWSLETTER has definitely gone through drastic changes in design and appearance, and social norms and attitudes certainly change, but its purpose has always been the same. It has offered an effective, consistent and (mostly) unbiased medium for education and news and a means by which readers could offer opinions, concerns and even vent their anger or express their joys.

In honor of ASA’s 100 years of dedication to science, patient safety and effective communication, the following short piece offers a bit of history from selected time periods as represented in past NEWSLETTERs.

Today, means of communication continue to change and grow literally each day. Members get up-to-date information daily on the ASA Web site, and almost all ASA materials and information can be accessed online, including the ASA NEWSLETTER. But though the technology has changed, the need and desire to communicate has not. Whether it be 1905 or 2005, ASA members have always had an active dialogue with each other. Here’s hoping for another 100 years of open lines of communication!
