Anesthesiology Residency Review Committee Resident Member Recruitment

Corey E. Collins, D.O.
Residency Review Committee
for Anesthesiology

he time has come for another anesthesiologist-in-training to seek appointment to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee for Anesthesiology (ACGME-RRC), who will be nominated by the ASA Resident Component Governing Council and approved by the ASA Board of Directors. Interested residents are encouraged to seek appointment for this position and their own program’s support for this appointment.

Committee members are all volunteers, nine anesthesiologists from around the nation and one resident or fellow. Meetings take place twice yearly at accessible locations, and the resident member reviews three to four program surveys prior to the meeting. Other work of the committee varies with projects on the agenda but might include, for example, discussion of new programs or major or minor revisions to the program requirements.

In addition, RRC resident members are invited to participate in the ACGME Resident Council. This body is asked to provide its unique perspective to issues facing ACGME. On occasion special ACGME retreats are planned to tackle specific challenges and provide guidance to the ACGME Board of Directors.

Previous resident appointees have published excellent descriptions of the RRC and its role; the interested reader is referred to the November 2001 ASA NEWSLETTER article titled “What Is ACGME and What Is Its Role in Residency Education?,” written by Carlos L. Moreno, M.D., and the May 1999 NEWSLETTER article titled “Introduction to the Residency Review Committee,” written by Janet D. Pearl, M.D. I have also published my thoughts on the RRC in “What Every Resident Should Know About the ACGME, RRC and Your Program” in the December 2004 NEWSLETTER .

In closing it has been a great honor to provide the resident voice to the RRC these two years. Inquiries regarding the position may be forwarded to <coreycollins@comcast.net> or through the ASA Resident Component Governing Council <www.ASAhq.org/asarc/officers.html>. Residents interested in consideration should forward a letter of interest, current curriculum vitae and letter of support from his or her program director to E. Olita Layton, M.D., Chair, Resident Component, 1123 English Bluffs Court, Brandon, FL 33511, by Wednesday, June 1, 2005.

Corey E. Collins, D.O., is a Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School and Children’s Memorial Hospital Boston, Boston, Massachusetts.
