Residents’ Research Essay Contest Award Recipients Honored

ichael K. Cahalan, M.D., Chair of the Committee on Research, has announced that the committee will award prizes for the following three entries in the ASA 2005 Residents’ Research Essay Contest:

First Prize
Edmund H. Jooste, M.B., Ch.B., Columbia University, New York, New York, for “Rapacuronium Augments Acetylcholine-Induced Bronchoconstriction Via Positive Allosteric Interactions at the M3 Muscarinic Receptor.”

Second Prize
Peter Nagele, M.D., Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria, for “Xenon Acts by Inhibition of Non-NMDA Receptor Mediated Glutamatergic Neurotransmission in Caenorhabditis elegans.”

Third Prize
Bettina Jungwirth, M.D., Universitat Munchen, Munchen, Germany, for “Xenon Impairs Neurocognitive and Histologic Outcome Following Cardiopulmonary Bypass Combined With Cerebral Air Embolism in the Rat.”

Recipients will receive a plaque during the ASA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, October 24, at 9 a.m. during the House of Delegates meeting in the New Orleans Marriott.
