 |
| Ronald A. Gabel, M.D. |
onald A. Gabel, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology
at the University of Rochester in New York has recently
been elected one of six at-large members of the Executive
Committee of the American Medical Association Physician
Consortium for Performance Improvement <www.physician
consortium.org>. The Consortium
is made up of 73 national medical specialty societies
and 16 state medical societies. Its primary mission
is to develop evidence-based physician performance
measures to facilitate quality improvement and to
document quality of care provided by physicians.
Founded in 2000, the Consortium has, to date, developed
16 measurement sets composed of 93 individual performance
measures. Dr. Gabel has represented ASA on the Consortium
since its inception. He co-chaired the workgroup that
developed the organization’s initial strategic
plan and currently co-chairs two workgroups that are
developing perioperative performance measures. For
the past five years he has represented the Consortium
on the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Performance
Measurement Advisory Group (PMAG), which develops
Category II CPT codes to facilitate reporting physician
performance to payers and other interested parties
<www.ama-assn.org/go/cpt>.
PMAG has developed more than 100 Category II CPT codes
for measures submitted by the Consortium and the National
Committee for Quality Assurance. Category II
CPT codes may become the primary vehicle used by physicians
to report on their performance to become eligible
for quality incentive payments (pay for performance)..
