Residents’ Research Essay
Contest Award Recipients Honored

K. Cahalan, M.D., Chair of the Committee on Research,
has announced that the committee will award prizes
for the following three entries in the 2006 ASA Residents’
Research Essay Award contest.
First Prize
Christiane Frick, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital,
Boston, Massachusetts for “Long-Term Effects
of Botulinum Toxin on Neuromuscular Function.”
Second Prize
Long T. Nguyen, M.D., State University of New York
at Stonybrook, Stonybrook, New York, for “Attenuation
of Anesthetic Preconditioning and Reactive Oxygen
Species Production in the Aged Heart.”
Third Prize
Hannah Wunsch, M.D., Columbia University, New York,
New York, for “Increased Mortality Associated
With Acute Respiratory Failure of Extra-Pulmonary
Origin.”
Winners receive a plaque and cash award to acknowledge
their achievement.
The awards will be presented during the Celebration
of Research at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, October 16, at
McCormick Place.

Society News: Florida Society Elects Top Officer

V. Miguel, M.D., was elected as President of the Florida
Society of Anesthesiologists at its June 25, 2006,
Annual Meeting in Palm Beach.
Dr. Miguel is Professor and Program Director of Pain
Medicine of the departments of Anesthesiology and
Neurosurgery at the University of South Florida in
Tampa. He is a lifelong academic anesthesiologist
and pain physician who has participated in numerous
clinical trials and has published extensively in the
field of pain medicine and various perioperative medicine
topics. He was the first anesthesiologist appointed
to the Florida Board of Medicine, serving as vice-chair
of the board and chair of its Credentials Committee
and Physician Assistants Council.
