esearch by Emery N. Brown, M.D., Ph.D., which focused on what happens to the brain during anesthesia, was featured in a July 31 MIT News article.



Timing Is Everything


ames S. Hicks, M.D., was quoted in August 3 Associated Press and HealthDay articles on the relation between postoperative problems such as nausea and pain and the time of day when surgeries are performed. ASA members David A. Lubarsky, M.D., and David J. Birnbach, M.D., M.P.H., also were quoted in the HealthDay article.

• Lee A. Fleisher, M.D., was quoted in an August 14 U.S. News & World Report article on the topic of surgery times and postoperative events.



ASA Prez on Sedation


n August 9 Wall Street Journal article on new guidelines and training for nonanesthesiologist personnel administering sedation featured quotes from ASA President Orin F. Guidry, M.D., on ASA guidelines for training and credentials needed for administering sedation. Karen B. Domino, M.D., M.P.H, was quoted on malpractice insurance claims associated with sedation administration.


MITSS Hits Stress in Hospitals

rederick A. Van Pelt, M.D., was featured for the development of the Medically Induced Trauma Support Services (MITSS) organization in an August 2006 Hospitals & Health Networks Magazine article exploring hospital efforts to provide ways for staff to cope with stress and sadness.


OSA Implications on Surgery Explored

he August issue of the American Academy of Pediatrics News featured information on recent ASA panel discussions on the perioperative implications of obstructive sleep apnea in an article on managing sedations risks and perioperative implications for children with OSA.
