ASA Art Exhibit at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Chicago
again provided a superb venue for meeting attendees
to escape from the hectic activities of an international
conference. Approximately 50 artists exhibited well
over 130 pieces, a significantly larger showing
than the 2005 exhibit, which was truncated severely
by Hurricane Katrina.
The exhibit was located immediately adjacent to
the entrance of the Exhibit Hall, making the display
available to nearly all attendees. We opted to open
the gates one hour prior to the opening of the hall
on Sunday, the first day of the exhibit. That was
fortuitous, because it gave attendees the opportunity
to see the art display while waiting for the main
attraction. It also facilitated sales of “My
Hometown” T-shirts, commemorating the theme
and logo of the display.
Again this year, kudos go to David Alpern, a member
of the office staff of the Department of Anesthesiology
at the University of Virginia. Dave’s third
year of providing tireless service to the committee,
the exhibitors and visitors deserves the highest
praise.
Art judges were Mary Beyer, an art curator at the
McCormick Gallery, and Michael Bonesteel, an art
historian and writer. Again this year, Marcia Childress,
Ph.D., Associate Director of the Center for Humanism
in Medicine at the University of Virginia, served
as juror for the literature submissions.
The judges selected the following winners:
