Call for Candidates for Presidential
Scholar Award
he goal of the Presidential Scholar Award is to highlight
research by faculty members in anesthesiology departments.
The deadline for submissions for the 2007 award is
March 31, 2007.
Anesthesiologists who are within seven years of their
first appointment to a department of anesthesiology,
who are board-certified, ASA members, and who spend
at least two days a week in clinical practice are
eligible for this award. Further, nominees must be
academically accomplished with peer-reviewed publications
and funded research. Candidates should be nominated
by their department chair or by the Committee on Research
after review of the current year’s grant applicants
of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research.
Only one nominee per department will be accepted.
The completed application must include documentation
of the qualifications listed above; current curriculum
vitae; letters of support from the chair, two other
senior faculty and two current residents, postdoctorial
students or fellows; copies of the three most important
peer-reviewed publications; and a current five-year
academic plan with anticipated major contributions
to the field of anesthesiology (two-page limit).
The Committee on Excellence in Research will judge
the applications and select a winner. The recipient
of the Presidential Scholar Award will be asked to
present a brief summary of his or her work at the
Celebration of Research at the 2007 Annual Meeting
in San Francisco, California. The winner will receive
a plaque, $1,000 award, travel reimbursement, plus
one day’s lodging and per diem.

Certificate
in Business Administration
Program for 2007
SA is pleased to announce the 2007 Certificate in
Business Administration Program. The program is designed
to provide physicians with the business skills needed
to successfully manage the operations and functions
of their health care organization or medical practice.
The first on-site session will be held the weekend
of March 17-18, 2007, at the Woodlands
Resort and Conference Center in Houston, Texas, with
three additional on-site sessions at the Woodlands
throughout the year. Please see the other dates below:

November 3-4, 2007
January 12-13, 2008
The program will consist of a total of 10 modules.
Five of the modules will be presented at the on-site
sessions, and five of the modules will be completed
through distance learning via DVD/ROMs. Space is still
available for the course.

Nominations
Sought for Award for Excellence in Research
he
annual ASA Award for Excellence in Research recognizes
an individual for outstanding achievement in research
that has or is likely to have an important impact
on the practice of anesthesiology.
The individual’s work must represent a body
of original, mature and sustained contribution to
the advancement of the science of anesthesiology.
The nominee need not be a physician, an anesthesiologist
or a member of ASA but must be presently engaged in
research related to anesthesiology.
In 2006, the award was presented to Nicholas P. Franks,
Ph.D., at the ASA Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois,
on Monday, October 16, 2006, immediately preceding
the Emery A. Rovenstine Memorial Lecture.
Dr. Franks is Professor of Biophysics and Anaesthetics,
The Blackett Laboratory, Biophysics Section of the
Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine
in London, England.
The deadline for nominations for the 2007 Award for
