SAMBA: Resident
Opportunities Abound
Peter Wu, M.D., Chair, Resident
Section
Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia
ith
an estimated 75 percent to 80 percent of all anesthetics
in the United States today being provided in the ambulatory
setting, knowledge about the changing practice of
ambulatory anesthesiology is becoming increasingly
important. This proportion will likely grow in the
future as more ambulatory surgical centers are built,
minimally invasive and office-based procedures grow,
and more traditional “hospital-based”
surgeries are converted to the outpatient setting.
The Resident Section of the Society for Ambulatory
Anesthesia (SAMBA) was created two years ago to help
residents learn about current and emerging ambulatory
anesthetic issues, gain experience in organized medical
societies and promote their development as future
leaders within the Society. We are working hard to
promote awareness of the relatively new SAMBA Resident
Section at national meetings and forge strong ties
with the ASA Resident Component. SAMBA offers several
$1,000 Resident Travel Awards to the SAMBA Annual
Meeting for residents who are interested in engaging
in ambulatory anesthesiology research and participating
in many of the Society’s activities. Also there
will be a Resident Leadership Symposium during the
SAMBA Annual Meeting in San Diego for a select number
of interested residents on Thursday, May 2, 2007.
We would like to invite interested residents to learn
more about the SAMBA Resident Section by visiting
our section of the SAMBA Web site at www.sambahq.org/residents/mission.html.
Residents may read our e-Newsletter, featuring interviews
by residents of their attending physicians on current
ambulatory anesthesiology topics. The Web site also
features information on past resident travel award
winners, instructions on how to apply for this year’s
resident travel awards and more details of the Resident
Leadership Symposium as they become available. The
resident agenda and social events at the SAMBA Annual
Meeting, as well as other resident committee activities,
also are highlighted on the Web site. In the near
future, we hope to include information on new ambulatory
anesthesiology fellowships and other research opportunities
in ambulatory anesthesiology.
