in Smoke
Michigan State Senator Tom M. George, M.D., was
featured in the February 23 Toledo Blade
for efforts to ban smoking in Michigan bars, workplaces
and restaurants. Dr. George commented that as an
anesthesiologist, he has seen the consequences of
smoking and secondhand smoke exposure.
Fire
Dept. Hails ASA Member
The February 28 Omaha World Herald (Omaha,
Nebraska) announced that Thuc H. Tran, M.D., was
honored by the Omaha Fire Department for his efforts
to save a man who collapsed during a softball tournament
last summer.
Resident
Plugs Specialty
Joshua H. Atkins, M.D., a resident at the University
of Pennsylvania Medical Center, was featured in
the March issue of The New Physician in
a specialty close-up article on anesthesiology and
the draw for medical students to the specialty.
Indiana
Team Takes on Jordan
The Hendricks County Flyer (Avon, Indiana)
reported on March 19 that Simon C. Hillier, M.B.,
was part of a surgical team from Riley Hospital
for Children that traveled to Amman, Jordan, to
perform surgeries on children suffering from heart
problems or defects.
Old
CPR Techniques Take a Beating
John W. Blenko, M.D., appeared on a Maryland
Public Television “Direct Connection” segment
on March 19 to discuss recent study findings reporting
that mouth-to-mouth is not as beneficial as performing
more chest compressions during CPR.
New
Approaches in Organ Donation
Gail A. Van Norman, M.D., was quoted in a March
18 Washington Post article on current trends
in organ donation and a recent approach in which
surgeons are removing organs minutes after the heart
stops beating.
Airway
Expert
On March 20, the Associated Press announced
that Kathleen C. Hittner, M.D., was named as the
new chair of Rhode Island Airport Corp., which is
responsible for the operations and maintenance of
Rhode Island state-owned airports.
