Anesthesiologist Lauded for Pet Project

James M. Riopelle, M.D., was featured in the March 22 The Advocate (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) for his participation in a national emergency pet relief program designed to train volunteers to aid in pet rescues and care during disasters. Dr. Riopelle helped save 60 animals stranded at Lindy Boggs Medical Center during Hurricane Katrina.


No MUA for CSA

The March 31 Sacramento Bee quoted Mark A. Singleton, M.D., on the controversy surrounding the practice of manipulation under anesthesia (MUA). Dr. Singleton commented that the California Society of Anesthesiologists opposes MUA.


Fresh Air in Utah

Scott N. Hurst, M.D., was quoted in the April 3 Salt Lake Tribune as a member of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, which recently launched a campaign to cut air pollution throughout the state.


Blocks Halt Hot Flashes

WMAQ-TV (Chicago) featured Eugene Lipov, M.D., in a health segment on April 5 for his use of nerve blocks to treat patients for hot flashes associated with menopause and estrogen depletion.


Truth Serums a Lie?

Ronald D. Miller, M.D., participated in an April 11 National Public Radio report on the use of “truth serums.” Dr. Miller clarified that there is no such thing as a truth serum or a single drug that will cause a person to reveal secrets.


ASA President Addresses Awareness

ASA President Mark J. Lema, M.D., Ph.D., was quoted in an April 14 MSN Health & Fitness “Reality Check” column on anesthesia awareness. Dr. Lema provided facts on the rare occurrence of the condition.


Member Gets Hero Award

The Bucks County Courier Times (Levittown, Pennsylvania) reported on April 14 that Maria A. Bartolozzi, M.D., received the Lower Bucks County American Red Cross 2007 medical hero award for her efforts to resuscitate a man who was drowning at a local swim club pool.


Top Brass Consulted for Prez Commission

The New York Times reported on April 14 that John H. Chiles, M.D., a retired colonel and former chief of anesthesiology at Walter Reed Medical Center, was among several soldiers and veterans who provided comment to the President’s Commission on Care for America’s Returning Wounded Warriors.
