reported on the efforts of Warren W. Pagel, M.D.,
to orchestrate travel to Oklahoma and successful
reconstructive surgery for Ricardo Jose Hernandez,
a Nicaraguan boy who was born without an esophagus.

Timothy J. Hannon, M.D., was featured in the April
27 Indianapolis Star for forming the Strategic
Healthcare Group, which provides consultation to
hospitals to help better manage their blood supply
and the ongoing demand for blood at their institutions.

Scott W. Maxwell, M.D., participated in an April
27 KOCO-TV (Oklahoma City) health news
segment providing information on risk factors and
diagnosis for patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

article on May 1 focused on the broad roles anesthesiologists
and nurse anesthetists play in patient care. Rebecca
Hassoun Welch, M.D., and Hector Vila, Jr., M.D.,
are quoted throughout the article, providing information
on anesthesia safety, possible anesthetic complications
and the role of the anesthesiologist as a patient
advocate before, during and after surgery.

Inducted Into ACCCM
The Plain Dealer (Cleveland, Ohio) announced
on May 3 that Samuel A. Irefin, M.D., was among
three Cleveland Clinic doctors recently inducted
into the American College of Critical Care Medicine
by the Society of Critical Care Medicine for their
contributions and personal commitment to the field
of critical care.

Prez’s Art Collection on Display
The May 18 Grand Forks Herald reported
that an exhibit at the Grand Forks North Dakota
Museum of Art will feature pieces from the collection
of 2003 ASA President James E. Cottrell, M.D., a
native of North Dakota.
Anesthesiologist
& Daughter Climb Into Record Books
David D. Larson, M.D., and Samantha Larson were
featured in the May 21 Los Angeles Times
as the first father-daughter team to climb the seven
summits, the highest peaks on each of the seven
continents. Samantha, who is 18 years old, is also
the youngest person to conquer the seven summits,
including reaching Mt. Everest on May 17.

Member Re-elected to MSMS
On May 21, the Kalamazoo Gazette (Kalamazoo,
Michigan) announced that Michael D. Chafty, M.D.,
J.D., was re-elected to a second third-year term
on the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors.
Dr. Chafty also was re-elected as a Michigan delegate
to the American Medical Association.
