Stovaine Ampoules, ca. 1910
Ernest Fourneau produced a local anesthetic initially marketed
to the English-speaking world as “Fourneau-caine.”
Embarrassment over confusion with “fornicate”
soon forced a new marketing strategy. The proprietary name
of the new synthetic local anesthetic was changed to Stovaine.
(His name, Fourneau, is the French word for stove.
