hile the United States and the developed world enjoy a very high standard of medical care; anesthesia care in particular, many in the developing nations of the world don't have these services available. Nowhere is the shortage of trained anesthesia providers more acute than in Africa. The goal of the Overseas Teaching Program (OTP) is to “Teach Teachers” by providing support to existing anesthesia training programs. This comes in the form of curriculum design and development, providing lectures on topics where there is no local resource available, and training the local faculties to assume full responsibility for their own programs.

OTP has concentrated on the teaching of anesthesia. There are many organizations that provide medical and surgical services, of which anesthesia is a vital part.. To that end we have listed some web sites as links to this site. One should not consider a link to this site as an endorsement by either the ASA or OTP.
We envision that anesthesiologists with an interest in an overseas volunteer experience will use this web site to learn about the overseas teaching programs of the ASA and consider supporting our programs. We also welcome interest from our resident members. Finally, the ASA programs are fully supported by the entire membership of ASA through their dues. We are grateful for that support and welcome contributions from any interested parties. For questions feel free to contact the Chair, Committee on Overseas Teaching Programs.
