Eugene P. Sinclair, M.D.

Welcome to this special area of the American Society of Anesthesiologists' (ASA) Web site dedicated to commemorating our 100th anniversary.

It is my pleasure and honor to be serving as ASA President during 2005, the Centennial year of our organization.

Anesthesiology is a profession rich in history, and it is a history that has contributed greatly to the advancement of medical science. Without the amazing advances in anesthesia drugs and techniques over the past century, much of the miracle of modern medicine and surgery would be impossible.

Recently our specialty has been recognized as a leader in improving patient safety. But our dedication to the patient dates back to our very beginnings. A look at the highlights of ASA’s history shows how strongly the safety of patients has motivated the research, education, training and dedication of our specialty, all of which have produced the safe and effective state of anesthesia today.

Today we have our more than 40,000 members to thank for our strength. Just as important, we had those remarkable men and women who went before us. They discovered new science, they treated patients with compassion and caring, and they taught the next generations of anesthesiologists. We salute them.

We are proud to say that since our founding in 1905, the achievements of the American Society of Anesthesiologists have made it an important voice in American Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain.

I hope you will join in our celebration by taking a look at our Web site to see how anesthesiology has evolved and how patients of today benefit from “A Century of Advancing Patient Safety.”

Sincerely,

President
