For several years, FAER has considered the potential of a fun, friendly competition between academic anesthesiology departments as a means of raising funds. Gaining steam at FAER’s 2022 Development Retreat, this proposal crystalized into FAER’s first ever Academic Giving Competition (AGC). Lasting 11 days and centered around ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2022, the AGC saw 19 departments compete for first place in two categories: most funds raised; and most donors. Each “team” was led by volunteer captains committed to the future of anesthesiology research, promoting giving around the competition and keeping their respective departments informed.
The initial goal for the competition was $35,000, in keeping with fundraising results from previous annual meetings. Thanks to the incredible efforts of the Team Captains, FAER surpassed this goal before the annual meeting had even begun. The goal was then raised multiple times over the course of ANESTHESIOLOGY, with each increase met and surpassed by the outpouring of gifts from those looking to take home the trophy.
On the final day of the competition, FAER set a final goal of $135,000, a full $100,000 over the competition’s original goal. Even as the competition neared its end, giving was fast and furious. After the dust settled, the 19 teams had raised a staggering $165,000 thanks to 382 generous donors!
The competition was fierce, but two departments emerged victorious.
Total Funds Raised: $25,146
Team Captains: Thomas J. Ebert, MD, PhD; Julie K. Freed, MD, PhD; Cynthia A. Lien, MD
“Participating in this competition and seeing people advocating for the future of our specialty in a fun, competitive way, made us incredibly proud to be physician-scientists in Anesthesiology. We really felt the competition created a needed energy amongst all Anesthesiologists and it was thrilling to have individuals contribute as first-time donors. We personally want to thank everyone, from all institutions, who donated during this initiative and a special thank you to those who recognized the amazing contributions of Drs. Stuth, Stucke, and Zuperku at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Our department is honored to receive the FAER Academic Giving Campaign Award for most dollars raised and reflects our commitment to supporting the future of Anesthesiology.”
- Thomas J. Ebert, MD, PhD; Julie K. Freed, MD, PhD; Cynthia A. Lien, MD
Total Donors: 55
Team Captain: Robert Maniker, MD, MSc
“The Columbia University Department of Anesthesiology is proud to accept the award for greatest number of donors in the first ever FAER Academic Giving Competition. Columbia is an enthusiastic supporter of FAER as well as a longstanding beneficiary of FAER support for academic research. The competition was a fun way to raise funds for FAER while also promoting FAER’s mission and its impact on our department.
“We have received 30 FAER grants over the past 40 years that have contributed immensely to both the individual careers of Columbia Faculty and to the greater mission of the department as a place for innovation, education, and research. Our goals and the FAER goals could not be better aligned!
“Thank you to all Columbia supporters who participated in the competition! Go Columbia and Go FAER!!”
- Robert Maniker, MD, MSc
Along with celebrating the two winning departments, FAER would also like to give a special shoutout to the two runners-up:
Most Funds Raised Runner-Up: University of California, San Francisco
Team Captain: Catherine L. Chen, MD, MPH
