Masimo Supports Early-Career Investigators

February 8, 2024

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) thanks Masimo for its generous $50,000 gift in 2023 in support of FAER’s mission to develop the next generation of physician-investigators. Masimo’s unrestricted gift will support various FAER efforts, primarily the grants and programs FAER offers medical students, residents, and early career faculty.

FAER is honored to support anesthesiology’s physician investigators as they develop the skills and experience needed in their pursuit of anesthesia research. FAER funds students in the earliest stages of their journey through the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF), to investigators working to make the leap to federal funding through the Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG). FAER takes great pride in fostering the scientists responsible for leading anesthesiology into the future. To learn more about FAER and its activities, view the Foundation’s 2022 Annual Report here.

Masimo is a global leader of innovative medical technology that aims to improve healthcare outcomes while ensuring patient safety. Their technology helps monitor over 200 million patients worldwide each year. Masimo’s patient monitoring devices have saved many lives and have changed the way clinicians utilize technology to care for patients. Most notably, Masimo Signal Extraction Technology® (SET®) is now considered to be modern pulse oximetry and has revolutionized the accuracy of patient monitoring.

Since its inception, Masimo has been a hub of innovation and now has more than 600 patents under its name. From pulse oximetry to baby monitors, Masimo is relentless in their pursuit of technology that truly makes a difference.

Masimo is a supporter of research innovation and educational opportunities that help make healthcare safer and put patients in better hands. In addition to their support for FAER, Masimo has also been an official industry supporter of the American Society for Anesthesiologists (ASA) for nine years.

“At Masimo, we work to solve the unsolvable in healthcare. Our innovations are designed to empower clinicians and improve patient safety. We have chosen to be an industry supporter of ASA and FAER because we recognize that these organizations are committed to improving patient outcomes and the research and education that they sponsor continues to demonstrate that commitment.”
– Joe Kiani, Masimo Founder, Chairman, and CEO

“On behalf of FAER, I am pleased to thank Masimo for their profoundly generous giving to FAER. Having personally benefited from a FAER grant, I know how meaningful the Foundation’s support can be for an up-and-coming investigator and their success in the field of anesthesiology research. By supporting FAER and our work, Masimo has shown its dedication to securing the future of research in anesthesiology, and, by extension, ensuring the care we offer our patients continues to improve. I look forward to seeing the positive impact Masimo’s support will have on early career investigators benefiting from FAER funding.”
– Dolores B. Njoku, MD, Chair of the FAER Board of Directors

Masimo has had an exciting year of technological developments that place innovation in the hands of the people who need it most. From an opioid overdose monitoring device to receiving FDA clearance on the Masimo W1® medical watch—Masimo continues to bring hospital grade accuracy to consumer technology and momentum continues to mount.

This year, Masimo released the Stork baby monitor, which uses its proprietary SET® pulse oximeter to monitor newborns when “every second counts.” Instead of an ordinary pulse oximeter, which is placed on the wrist and finger, the Stork uses a boot to continuously monitor newborns pulse, skin temperature, and blood oxygen saturation. Masimo also offers a high-resolution camera to monitor movement and a hub to monitor for changes like temperature in a newborn’s environment.
