26th Annual FAER-Helrich Research Lecture: The Prepared Mind
Saturday, October 17 | 2:45 – 3:45 a.m. PDT | San Diego Convention Center; 30CDE, Upper Level
Lecturer: Hugh C. Hemmings Jr., MD, PhD, FRCA
Moderator: Charles W. Emala Sr., MS, MD
The FAER-Helrich Research Lecture recognizes outstanding scholarship by a scientist and is part of FAER’s ongoing effort to encourage early career anesthesiologists and trainees to consider careers in research and teaching.
Despite their clinical importance, the mechanisms by which volatile anesthetics produce anesthesia remain poorly understood. A role for voltage-gated sodium channels in the neurophysiological effects of volatile anesthetics has been proposed. Three decades of research have recently resulted in the identification of a functionally important anesthetic binding site in a sodium channel consistent a role in modulating neuronal activity in general anesthesia. This brings us one step closer to enabling the design of more selective anesthetics with fewer side effects. The importance of training in fundamental research to advances in anesthesiology is highlighted in a representative career path.
Learning objectives for this lecture include the ability to:
FAER Panel: Education in Research as a Foundation for Anesthesia Leadership
Saturday, October 17 | 4 – 5 p.m. PDT | San Diego Convention Center; 30CDE, Upper Level
Moderator: Hugh C. Hemmings Jr., MD, PhD, FRCA
Speakers:
The pathways leading to successful careers as academic leaders and researchers in anesthesiology are varied. This panel highlights the paths of three successful academic leaders: a laboratory researcher studying fundamental anesthetic pharmacology, a data scientist applying big data approaches to the data rich field of anesthesia, and a translational pharmacologist applying clinical pharmacology to obstetric anesthesia, who each summarize their research training and background, and then how it shaped their careers as scientists and as leaders in anesthesiology.
FAER/eSAS: How to Be a Good Mentee (Featuring Expert Mentors)
Sunday, October 18 | 8 – 9 a.m. PDT | San Diego Convention Center; 29ABCD, Upper Level
Moderator: Daniel Larach, MD
Speakers:
In this panel, three senior investigators will discuss what characteristics and behavior make for good (and not-so-good) mentees. Through this discussion, the panelists will provide suggestions for attendees on how to get the most out of any mentor-mentee relationship.
FAER/eSAS: Superstars! Successful Funding Transitions After MSARF/FAER Grants
Sunday, October 18 | 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. PDT | San Diego Convention Center; 29ABCD, Upper Level
Moderator: Saul Siller, MD, PhD
Speakers:
This session will feature three panelists that have had prior MSARF and/or FAER mentored research grants and have launched successful research careers as a result. The panelists will focus their discussion on how these early grants directly contributed to their later success and how others can use these grants as a springboard for their own success as academic anesthesiologists and researchers.
FAER/ARMA Sponsored Mentoring Session: Finding the Right Research Question and Path, Right Environment and Culture, and Right Mentor
Sunday, October 18 | 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. PDT | San Diego Convention Center; 29ABCD, Upper Level
Moderator: Peter Nagele, MD, MSc
Speakers: TBD
This 60-minute session will consist of two parts. The first 10 minutes will be a presentation by the 2026 FAER Mentoring Excellence in Research Awardee. The topics which will be covered are: 1) Finding the right research question and path; 2) Finding the right environment and culture; and 3) Finding the right mentor.
We will then have breakout tables with table captains who are experienced academic mentors for a more personal discussion with attendees. If you’ve ever wondered what mentors expect of trainees or wished to become a better mentor yourself, this FAER Academy of Research Mentors session run by highly successful clinician scientists is geared specifically for you. A major highlight of this panel is the opportunity for participants to hear from experts and also have small group and personal discussions.
FAER Medical Student and Resident Research Poster Presentations
Sunday, October 18 | 1 – 4:15 p.m. PDT | San Diego Convention Center; 29ABCD, Upper Level
MSARF Poster Presentations: 1 - 2 p.m. PDT
RSP Poster Presentations: 2:45 - 3:45 p.m. PDT
Awards Ceremony: 4 - 4:15 p.m. PDT
Moderator: Chad M. Brummett, MD
The FAER Medical Student and Resident Poster Presentations brings together FAER sponsored Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellows (MSARF) and Resident Scholar Program (RSP) participants to present their research projects conducted in anesthesiology departments across the nation. Medical students have been directly supported by FAER for a summer-long research experience at their own or another medical university and both students and residents are required to present scholarly activity projects with strong preference for original research.
Students and residents will be together for more effective networking and mentoring opportunities among young trainees in order to better expose them to major research topics in advancing the field of anesthesiology.
THE FOUNDATION FOR ANESTHESIA EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (FAER)
FAER is a related foundation of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). For 40 years, FAER has been dedicated to developing the next generation of physician-investigators in anesthesiology. Charitable contributions and support to FAER help fuel the future of anesthesiology through scientific discovery. Funding priorities include: Research, Education, and Training. At the time of this article's publication, FAER has awarded more than $63 million in research grants and programs since 1986. To donate to FAER, visit FAER.org/donate.
