FAER established the Academic Giving Competition (AGC) in 2022 as a fun, friendly way for academic anesthesiology departments around the country to enjoy spirited competition and raise funds for FAER. The AGC is a wonderful way to support the future of education and research in anesthesiology, with all proceeds from the competition going towards FAER’s mission to develop the next generation of physician-investigators.

Beginning in 2025, FAER is pleased to welcome practice groups to join in on the AGC fun as they compete against each other for the win. Note that practice groups and their members will not compete directly with the academic departments.

If your academic department or practice group has questions or interest in signing up for the AGC, please contact [email protected].

COMPETITION DATES
The AGC is held annually in October and centered around the American Society for Anesthesiologists’ (ASA) ANESTHESIOLOGY® conference. The competition kicks off the Friday before the conference begins and runs for 12 days total.

The 2025 AGC will run from 12:00 a.m. CT, October 3, through 11:59 p.m. CT, October 14.

COMPETITION GROUPINGS
While all donations made during the AGC go towards the competition’s overall fundraising goal, academic departments only compete against other academic departments, and practice groups against other practice groups.

To maintain a level playing field, competitors are broken up into Tiers within their grouping, determined by faculty and physician member count.

Academic Departments (AD)

  • Departments with 110 or more faculty members are considered AD Large Tier.
  • Departments with less than 110 faculty members are considered AD Small Tier.

Practice Groups (PG)

  • Practice groups with 1,000 or more members are considered PG Large Tier.
  • Practice groups with less than 1,000 members are considered PG Small Tier.

HOW TO WIN
The AGC is focused on individual giving to FAER, with participating departments and groups encouraging their faculty, members, graduates, past residents, and supporters to donate on their behalf to FAER. Two winners will be selected per Tier (Large and Small) for both academic departments and practice groups, for a total of eight AGC winners overall.

Winners for each Tier are determined by:

  • Greatest Amount Donated ($): Total dollar amount donated on behalf of the department or practice group, including any matching funds donated by/for the department or practice group.
  • Greatest Number of Donors (#): Total number of donors who donated on behalf of the department or practice group. Each donor will be counted only once per department or practice group for the purposes of this winning criteria.

PRIZES & RECOGNITION
Beyond the pride taken in supporting education and research in anesthesiology, each department and practice group is recognized for their participation in the AGC. Before, during, and after the competition, FAER highlights participating departments and groups and celebrates their involvement through a wide variety of print, electronic, and social media channels:

  • Logo inclusion in a print ad in the ASA Monitor
  • Logo inclusion on FAER signage and print materials at ANESTHESIOLOGY
  • Name inclusion in mass AGC e-Blasts
  • Name in web article following the competition’s conclusion
  • Name included in FAER’s annual report
  • Handle tagged in AGC content on social media
  • Logo and dedicated page on Qgiv, the platform used to run the AGC

Prizes are also awarded to the competition winners:

  • Expanded Recognition (AD & PG): FAER loudly announces winning departments and practice groups across its social media channels, through e-blasts, on the FAER website, and in the Annual Report.
  • Trophies (AD & PG): A fun-yet-formal trophy is issued to help you celebrate your triumph for years to come.
  • FAER-Funded Party (AD Exclusive): To help our winners bring together all their wonderful donors who made their victory possible, FAER sponsors a celebratory get-together of your choosing.
  • Grand Rounds (AD Exclusive): Winning departments select a FAER leader to present grand rounds for the department during the following year. FAER covers all travel-related expenses.
