Ronald L. Harter, MD, FASA, professor of anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, is president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He was elected in October 2023.
Over the past three decades, Dr. Harter has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as ASA president-elect. Additionally, he served as speaker of ASA’s House of Delegates and ASA’s representative to the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience. He has chaired ASA’s Ad Hoc Committee on Physician Well-Being, Ad Hoc Committee on Resident Advocacy, Ad Hoc Committee on Board Engagement, Ad Hoc Committee on Market Strategy for Anesthesiology, Committee on Young Physicians, Committee on Residents and Medical Students, Committee on Expert Witness Testimony Review, and Committee on Bylaws. As president, he is also the current ex-officio chair of the Budget Committee. He has been a member of several ASA committees, including the Perioperative Surgical Home Steering Committee, Committee on Academic Anesthesiology, Section on Board Administrative Affairs, Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies, Ad Hoc Committee on Advertising Guidelines, Ad Hoc Committee on Rural Anesthesiology Rotation, and Ad Hoc Committee on Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Harter has been an active member of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists since 1994 and served as its president.
Dr. Harter received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and completed his Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
He lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Katharine; they have five children.
Donald E. Arnold, MD, FACHE, FASA, is president-elect of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He is also chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, and sits on the Board of Directors of Western Anesthesiology Associates, Inc., in Ballwin, Missouri.
Dr. Arnold has served ASA in numerous roles, including first vice president, treasurer, and assistant treasurer. He is chair of the Budget Committee and vice chair of the Committee on Representation to World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists. He has also chaired ASA’s Section on Fiscal Affairs, Committee on Quality Management and Departmental Administration, Ad Hoc Committee on Deep Sedation and Education, and Ad Hoc Committee on Payment and Care Delivery Models. Dr. Arnold was also a director and officer of the Anesthesia Quality Institute, and a director and officer of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research.
In addition to his commitments to ASA, Dr. Arnold has served as a full examiner and senior editor for the Standardized Oral Exam for the American Board of Anesthesiology, guest reviewer for Anesthesia & Analgesia, and ASA liaison to The Joint Commission. He served as president of the Missouri Society of Anesthesiologists and St. Louis Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Arnold received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, Wisconsin. He completed his transitional internship at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Connecticut, and his residency in anesthesiology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Hanover, New Hampshire. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
He resides in St. Louis with his wife, Tamara K. Ehlert, MD; they have three adult children.
Patrick Giam, MD, FASA, a physician partner at U.S. Anesthesia Partners in Houston, Texas, and an adjunct clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M School of Medicine in Bryan, Texas, is first vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He was elected in October 2023.
A long-time member of ASA and advocate for the specialty, Dr. Giam has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as speaker of the House of Delegates. As first vice president, he is also vice president of the Division of Administrative Affairs. Dr. Giam has served as chair of ASA’s Committee on Large Group Practice and as a member of the Committee on Bylaws, Ad Hoc Committee on Accountable Care Organizations, Governing Documents Alignment, Ad Hoc Committee on NACOR Assessment and Business Development, Ad Hoc Committee on Quality Practice Recognition, Ad Hoc Committee on Payment Reform, Ad Hoc Committee on Board Certification and Maintenance, Ad Hoc Committee on Annual Meeting Assessment, Committee on Neuroanesthesiology, and Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies. Additionally, he served as director of the Anesthesia Quality Institute, an ASA Foundation.
Dr. Giam is a long-serving member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists Board of Directors, where he also served as president. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Institute of Parliamentarians, and is a registered parliamentarian by the National Association of Parliamentarians.
Dr. Giam received his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Texas A&M University in College Station and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and his fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesiology at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
Michael W. Champeau, MD, FAAP, FASA, is immediate past president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). Dr. Champeau is also adjunct clinical professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and president of Associated Anesthesiologists Medical Group.
Dr. Champeau has served ASA in numerous roles, including ASA president, president-elect, first vice president, treasurer, and assistant treasurer. He has also served as chair of ASA’s Section on Fiscal Affairs, Budget Committee, and Ad Hoc Committee on Board Engagement, and as a member of the Committee on Annual Meeting Oversight, Committee on Physician Resources, Ad Hoc Committee on Data Governance, Ad Hoc Committee on Retired Member Engagement, Section on Board Administrative Affairs, Committee on Governmental Affairs, the Committee on Practice Management, and the PAC Executive Board.
In addition to his commitments to ASA, Dr. Champeau is past president of the California Society of Anesthesiologists and was president of the medical staff at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, California. He is a member of the California Medical Association and American Medical Association, as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also a recipient of the California Society of Anesthesiologists’ Distinguished Service Award and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Distinguished Medical Staff Service Award.
Dr. Champeau received his Bachelor of Science degree, with highest honors, from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, before receiving his medical degree from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a residency in anesthesiology at Stanford. He is board-certified in both anesthesiology and pediatrics.
Dr. Champeau resides in Burlingame, California, with his wife, pediatrician Patricia Soong, MD.
