ASA chair discusses screening for cannabis use before surgery in The Wall Street Journal
In the article, David Dickerson, M.D., chair of ASA’s Committee on Pain Medicine, was quoted saying all patients undergoing surgery are asked about cannabis use in his hospital system and patients who may need higher doses of anesthetic, or be more closely monitored, are those he considers “regular users,” who are taking cannabis more days than not. Additionally, Dr. Dickerson was quoted in an article on Healthcare Brew, where he discussed ASA’s support of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine’s new guidelines for the management of cannabis in the perioperative patient.
