ASA Past President Daniel Cole, MD, FASA, and Odmara Barreto Chang, MD, FASA, were quoted in a San Antonio Express News article on postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) and how presurgical cognitive screening can help doctors better predict the risk of POCD in older adults and take steps to prevent or minimize it. “Thankfully this is something that, in the past couple of years, people have been doing a lot more research about,” said Dr. Barreto Chang. “We now have strong evidence, for example, that if you have even mild cognitive impairment, you’re at increased risk for postoperative delirium and long-term cognitive decline.”
