SAN DIEGO – The
American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today announced the election of James D. Grant, M.D., M.B.A., to first vice president of the ASA during the
ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2015 annual meeting in San Diego.
Dr. Grant is chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak in Michigan, the largest hospital in the eight hospital system that comprises Beaumont Health. He is also professor and chair of anesthesiology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Rochester, Mich.
“Medicine is transforming at an unprecedented pace and it doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down,” said Dr. Grant. “We need to take advantage of these rapid changes and make it clear that physician anesthesiologists will be key players and leaders in our health care system.”
As first vice president, Dr. Grant will serve as a member of the ASA Executive Committee, which consists of the president, president-elect, first vice president and immediate past president. The Executive Committee expedites, executes and administers the policies adopted by the ASA House of Delegates and ASA Board of Directors.
Dr. Grant has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as ASA treasurer. He has been on the Board of Directors since 1999 and is currently chair of ASA’s Section on Fiscal Affairs and the Committee on Executive Compensation.
Dr. Grant is immediate past president of the Michigan State Medical Society and served as president of the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists from 1999-2000. He received the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists President’s Award in 2012. Dr. Grant currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Anesthesia Foundation, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. He is an associate examiner of the American Board of Anesthesiology and is the chair of the Michigan delegation to the American Medical Association.
Dr. Grant received his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing, his doctor of medicine from Wayne State University in Detroit and his Master of Business Administration from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in Bloomington. He completed his anesthesiology residency at Northwestern University Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Grant and his wife, Lisa, reside in Michigan and have two children, Brendan and Alexandra.
