SAN DIEGO – The
American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today presented Mark Neuman, M.D., Ph.D., with its 2015 Presidential Scholar Award in recognition of his outstanding career in research. Dr. Neuman is a leader in health services and outcomes research and is committed to growing anesthesiology as an academic specialty and improving clinical care.
Dr. Neuman is assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care and assistant professor of medicine (geriatrics) at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. He is also a senior fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Neuman was appointed associate editor of
Anesthesiology, the official medical journal of ASA, and is chair of the ASA Committee on Geriatric Anesthesia.
After graduating from Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and completing his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Neuman completed his residency in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He also earned a Master of Science degree while undertaking formal training in health policy and outcomes research through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania. During this program, he was able to interact with clinical scholars and faculty from multiple specialties, as well as visit with policymakers in Washington, D.C., and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
During medical school, Dr. Neuman became involved in research on tobacco control policy. His other research interests primarily focus on patient-centered outcomes of older adults undergoing surgery for hip fractures. His findings have been published in
Anesthesiology,
Anesthesia and Analgesia, the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and
JAMA Internal Medicine.
“Dr. Neuman’s research contributions make him a deserving recipient of the ASA Presidential Scholar Award,” said J.P. Abenstein, M.S.E.E., M.D., ASA president. “His research on hip fracture surgery has improved patient care and will continue to significantly enhance care for aging adults in the future.”
Since being named the Presidential Scholar, Dr. Neuman has received funding for a major clinical trial, which will examine the best approach to anesthesia care for patients undergoing hip fracture surgery, from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) in Washington, D.C.
