CHICAGO – The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) today announced Michael W. Champeau, M.D., FASA, has been named first vice president of ASA. Dr. Champeau was elected at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2020 annual meeting and will serve for one year.
Dr. Champeau is adjunct clinical professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine at Stanford University in Palo, Alto, California, and president of Associated Anesthesiologists Medical Group.
“I am honored to continue serving ASA and its members in this new role,” said Dr. Champeau. “I’m well aware of the challenges facing our profession, including fighting to preserve physician-led anesthesia care for patients and the intricacies involved with treating those critically-ill from COVID-19 – from having enough personal protective equipment (PPE) to maintaining physician anesthesiologists’ health and safety. I am looking forward to generating solutions to this and more in my new position.”
As first vice president, Dr. Champeau will serve as a member of the ASA Executive Committee, which consists of the president, president-elect, first vice president and immediate past president. The Executive Committee expedites, executes and administers the policies adopted by the ASA House of Delegates and ASA Board of Directors.
Dr. Champeau has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as treasurer. In this position, he accelerated decision making in response to the changing circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Dr. Champeau managed expenses and created an enhanced, transparent monthly reporting system, as well as special forecasting projects and related analysis essential to informing management decisions across all 2020 ASA activities. Dr. Champeau has also served as ASA’s Assistant Treasurer and on the ASA Committee on Government Affairs and ASA PAC Executive Board.
In addition to his commitments to ASA, Dr. Champeau is a past president of the California Society of Anesthesiologists and was president of the medical staff at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, California. He is a member of the California Medical Association and American Medical Association, as well as a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Champeau received his Bachelor of Science degree, with highest honors, from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana before receiving his medical degree from Yale University in New Haven, Conn. He completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a residency in anesthesiology at Stanford. He is board-certified in anesthesiology and pediatrics.
