SAN DIEGO – Randall M. Clark, M.D., FASA, professor of anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, was today named president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the nation’s largest organization of physician anesthesiologists. Dr. Clark assumed office at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2021 annual meeting and will serve for one year.
“I am honored to be able to serve ASA and its members as the next ASA president,” said Dr. Clark. “Whether it’s during surgery or invasive procedures, providing pain management, or serving on the front lines of a pandemic, physician anesthesiologists make patients’ lives better. I look forward to continuing ASA’s successes in advancing the specialty and helping to address the many significant challenges in our health care system. We have much work to do, but as we have throughout ASA’s 117-year history, we will ensure that patient safety remains our highest priority.”
Dr. Clark has served ASA in numerous roles, including as a member of the ASA Executive Committee and chair of the ASA Sections on Clinical Care and Professional Standards. He is also a member of ASA’s COVID-19 Council, and has served on the Committee on Innovation, Committee on Professional Education Oversight, Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies, Committee on Quality Management and Department Administration, and Committee on Pediatric Anesthesia. He has been on the ASA Board of Directors since 1995.
Dr. Clark is a long-serving member of the Colorado Society of Anesthesiologists’ Board of Directors and is part of ASA’s Delegation to the American Medical Association. He also serves on the Anesthesia Quality Institute’s Board of Directors and has held leadership positions with the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council and Denver Medical Society.
Dr. Clark received his Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering Sciences, with honors, from the University of Colorado in Boulder before graduating from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. He completed his anesthesiology residency and fellowships in pediatric and cardiac anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and is board-certified in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology.

Dr. Clark resides in Denver with his wife, obstetric anesthesiologist Joy. L. Hawkins, M.D., FASA. They have two daughters, Catherine and Victoria.
