ASA joined with 13 surgical, anesthesia and other organizations to request the Surgery Endorsement Maintenance Steering Committee vote to endorse National Quality Forum (NQF) measure 1741: Patient experience with surgical care based on the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) Surgical Care Survey.
The broad base of surgical specialty organizations organized because of a need to address "critical gaps in content and approach related to the assessment of surgical care" located in the previous CAHPS ® Clinician and Group Survey. The letter noted that "Some of the critical gaps identified in the survey include informed consent, shared decision making, anesthesia care, and post-operative instructions and access." ASA and these organizations believe that NQF measure 1741: CAHPS® Surgical Care Survey would be able to address these gaps. The survey is the result of years of effort and validation by the Surgical Quality Alliance, of which ASA is an active member.
