ASA has developed a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document regarding the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program.
The EHR Incentive Program was originally part of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which was included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will be implementing the EHR program in three stages that include incentives for meeting the criteria and penalties for not meeting the criteria.
In August of 2012, CMS released the final rule for Stage 2 of the EHR Incentive Program. As a direct result of ASA's advocacy efforts, the final rule created a temporary automatic hardship exemption from the penalties for anesthesiologists.
