The company model continues to pose a significant problem for practicing anesthesiologists across the country. In the company model, referring physicians or their practices set up a separate anesthesia company that they own. The company contracts with or employs anesthesiologists and/or non-physician anesthesia providers, bills for the anesthesia service, and shares in the revenue. The company model (including variations that result in the transfer of anesthesia fees to referring physicians) threatens the independent practice of anesthesiology and poses real legal and financial risks for anesthesiologists.
ASA conducted its first member survey on the company model in late 2010. The Committee on Practice Management has revised the survey and is asking ASA members to fill it out. It is critical that ASA get updated information on the extent and impact of the company model, in order to provide real evidence to regulatory agencies about the problem.
