This afternoon, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services. Sylvia Burwell previously served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. She is replacing Kathleen Sebelius, who resigned from HHS.
With the bipartisan confirmation, Sylvia Mathews Burwell will become the head of HHS, which is responsible for Medicaid and Medicare, the Food and Drug Administration, implementation of the Affordable Care Act and other health policy issues. ASA congratulates Sylvia Burwell on her confirmation and looks forward to working with her to continue efforts to improve our health care system and protect patient safety.
