The American Society of Anesthesiologists® (ASA) is pleased that Andrew Gettinger, MD has been appointed as the new Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). ONC is an entity within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that focuses on the adoption of health information technology (health IT) nationwide and the meaningful use of health IT. As CMIO, Dr. Gettinger plans to focus on improving the safety and quality of clinical care through safe health IT. He has substantial health IT experience after leading the development of an electronic health record (EHR) system at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Gettinger was also the senior physician leader when Dartmouth transitioned to a vendor-based EHR.
Dr. Gettinger is also Acting Director of ONC’s Office of Clinical Quality and Safety. He is a professor of anesthesiology, an adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Dartmouth, and Senior Scholar at the Koop Institute, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
