The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions has announced it will hold a hearing on Tuesday, August 1 to consider five executive branch nominees by President Donald J. Trump, including ASA member Jerome Adams, M.D., who was nominated to be the next Surgeon General. If the hearing is successful, and the Senate Committee votes to approve his nomination, the committee will send it to the full Senate for a vote.
The Surgeon General is nominated by the president and is confirmed by the U.S. Senate for a four-year term. The Office of the Surgeon General is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
If confirmed as the “nation’s doctor,” as the Surgeon General is sometimes known, Dr. Adams will work to provide Americans with scientific information on improving their health and reducing their risk of illness and injury. Dr. Adams would be the first physician anesthesiologist to ever hold the position.

• Lance Robertson, of Edmond, OK, nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Aging
• Brett Giroir, M.D., of College Station, TX, nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Health
• Robert Kadlec, M.D., of Alexandria, VA, nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response
• Elinore F. McCance-Katz, M.D., of Cranston, RI, nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use
