On Wednesday March 9, 2022, President Biden shared his intent to nominate Dr. Shereef Elnahal as Under Secretary for Health in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Dr. Elnahal has most recently served at University Hospital in Newark, NJ as its President and Chief Executive Officer. From 2018 to 2019 he served as New Jersey’s Health Commissioner. From 2016 through 2018 Dr. Elnahal served in the VA as Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Quality, Safety, and Value where he was responsible for the quality of care within VA facilities. His experience also includes co-founding the VHA Innovation Ecosystem that sought to facilitate innovation of best practices to improve care to veterans. Dr. Elnahal is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and went on to earn his dual MD-MBA from Harvard University in 2012. He completed a residency in radiation oncology at Johns Hopkins University and served as a White House Fellow under President Barack Obama.
