Today, ASA joined over 500 national organizations in expressing concern about proposed funding levels for key federal agencies involved in the nation’s scientific, public health and research infrastructure, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The joint statement addressed to bicameral and bipartisan federal appropriators notes that “Investment in medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) plays an irreplaceable role in advancing discovery that leads to new and better cures, diagnostics, and preventive interventions.” The formal communication notes that “As drafted, the proposed budget would cut about one-third of the agency’s discretionary spending and effectively devastate our nation’s research, scientific, and public health infrastructure.”
