Consistent with ASA’s ongoing efforts to address fentanyl abuse, ASA has formally endorsed H.R.3130, the Fentanyl Awareness for Children and Teens in Schools (FACTS) Act, which would establish education partnership programs between public schools and public health agencies to prevent the misuse and overdose of synthetic opioids by youth. This legislation, which was introduced by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR-01), is another important step in increasing accessibility and availability of naloxone to further reduce overdose fatalities by making naloxone available in school settings.
ASA has long supported equitable community access to naloxone across the United States as a nonprescription treatment. Naloxone is a medication that is safe for all members of the public to administer.
ASA commends this effort in Congress to increase the availability of naloxone and urges Congress to advance this legislation.
