The American Society of Anesthesiologists joined a coalition of major U.S. medical organizations to express concerns about the termination of all members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an expert-led panel that provides evidence-based vaccine recommendations.
In a formal communication to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the organizations call for the immediate reinstatement of the committee and emphasize the importance of adhering to the long-established, transparent nomination and selection process for future ACIP appointments.
Failing to reinstate ACIP and ensure it is composed of qualified, experienced experts has serious implications for public health and vaccine policy, including lack of trust and diminished access to life-saving vaccines.
