The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) joined 500 other organizations in urging key Congressional leaders to “reject any cuts to the [National Institutes of Health] and instead work with the Administration on a different path forward, one that sets the stage for unprecedented medical progress as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary.”
The coalition of NIH stakeholders was organized in response to ongoing concerns about the structure and funding of NIH. The groups argue that “NIH-funded research saves lives, drives medical breakthroughs, and fuels job creation in communities across all 50 states. At less than 1% of the federal budget, NIH delivers an outsized return on investment, generating $2.56 in economic activity for every $1 invested.”
Addressees of the document include members of the House and Senate Committees on Appropriations, the committees with jurisdiction over funding levels for the NIH.
