Washington State Adopts CAA Licensure/Practice Rules
The Washington Medical Commission adopted final rules for Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs). The newly adopted rule language takes effect July 27, 2025. ASA submitted comments on the 2025 proposed rule language and partnered with the Washington State Society of Anesthesiologists to enact the 2024 legislation authorizing CAA practice (Chapter 362, Laws of 2024).
The rules address CAA practice requirements including licensure, supervision, scope of practice, identification, continuing education, and discipline.
Nearly half the states now allow both types of non-physician anesthetists (nurse anesthetists and CAAs) to practice in the physician-led Anesthesia Care Team. CAAs are trained extensively in the delivery of quality anesthesia care as well as advanced patient monitoring techniques. They work exclusively under the medical direction of anesthesiologists to implement anesthesia care plans within the Anesthesia Care Team.
