On August 1, 2025, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed House Bill 1141 into law, preventing health insurers from imposing arbitrary time limits on anesthesia coverage and payment. This crucial legislation, effective immediately, was sponsored by Illinois lawmaker and ASA member Dr. William Hauter, with over 40 bipartisan cosponsors, including the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives.
In 2025, ASA strengthened its state-level economic advocacy by working with state components to counter unfavorable insurer policies, like the recently reversed Anthem proposal on anesthesia time. So far, three states—Connecticut, Maryland, and Oklahoma—have enacted similar laws preventing arbitrary time limits.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists proudly partnered with the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists to support this legislation and protect patients.
