As the government shutdown continues into its third week, CMS has issued new guidance regarding claims processing for services provided under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. ASA Payment and Practice Management staff as well as Quality and Regulatory Affairs staff expect to publish routine updates on any changes to payment or regulatory policies related to the government shutdown that affect anesthesiologists and their practices. All Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) have been instructed to lift the claims hold and begin processing claims with dates of service on or after October 1, 2025.
MACs will continue to hold claims for:
Clinicians in applicable ACOs may continue to furnish and receive payment for covered telehealth services under special telehealth flexibilities.
If you continue providing telehealth services after October 1, you may need to issue an ABN to Medicare beneficiaries before delivering the service. CMS has issued guidance on use of ABNs.
