The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is taking a strong stand against a newly proposed Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) Local Coverage Determination (LCD) that would deny coverage for peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs)—a proven, minimally invasive, non-opioid treatment for chronic pain. This policy could force millions of patients to rely on opioids or less effective alternatives, at a time when the opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities nationwide.
“For decades, chronic pain patients have benefited from PNBs and related procedures that deliver rapid and lasting pain relief, improve function, and reduce dependence on systemic medications, including opioids,” said ASA President Patrick Giam, M.D., FASA in a national press release. “We urge Medicare to consider the compelling clinical and functional evidence supporting these treatments and reverse this harmful proposal.”
ASA has submitted formal comments to all relevant MACs, citing robust scientific data, medical society guidelines, and real-world patient success stories that demonstrate the medical necessity of PNBs. ASA previously launched a grassroots call to action and organized ASA Pain Committee members to present at MAC open meetings. ASA is also collaborating with leading pain and medical organizations to halt the ill-advised policy.Date of last update: November 14, 2025
