At a recent House Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing, Congressman Lou Correa (D-CA) emphasized the importance of maintaining physician-led anesthesia care for Veterans, a core priority for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). His remarks highlighted the critical role of physician anesthesiologists in ensuring patient safety, particularly for Veterans undergoing surgical procedures.
During the Committees’ “Member Day” in which lawmakers can raise awareness of key priorities, Congressman Correa stated: “Finally I’d like to talk about anesthesiology and potential changes to surgical anesthesia patient safety standard. Let’s continue to have medical doctors administering anesthesia.” He further added: “Finally on anesthesiology for our Veterans, make sure it’s a physician. You don’t need a doctor until you need a doctor.”
ASA commends Congressman Correa for recognizing the essential role of physician anesthesiologists in protecting patients during the most complex and high-risk moments in the operating room. His comments reinforce ASA’s longstanding position that Veterans deserve high-quality, physician-led anesthesia care.
ASA will continue to work closely with Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that physician-led anesthesia care remains the standard for Veterans.
