The U.S. Senate has confirmed General John Bartrum as the Department of Veterans Affairs Under Secretary for Health (USH) in a 53–43 vote. In this role, Bartrum will lead the Veterans Health Administration, the nation’s largest integrated health care system.
ASA leadership met with General Bartrum in his previous role as Senior Advisor to the VA Secretary. The discussion focused on maintaining the team-based model of anesthesia in VA.
Bartum’s federal career includes senior roles at the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, and the Office of Management and Budget.
A Major General in the Air Force Reserve, Bartrum has more than 40 years of military service and played a key leadership role in the federal COVID‑19 medical response.
During his confirmation hearings, Bartrum emphasized improving care delivery, expanding access, and supporting the VA workforce.
