Today, ASA commended U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, MD, Co-Chair of the House GOP Doctors Caucus for his ongoing leadership in holding big health insurance companies accountable to patients and those who care for those patients. In a scathing statement to health insurance executives on January 22, 2026, Rep. Murphy, a urologist, stated that insurers’ have “put profits above patients and profits above those who care for patients.” He added that the plans have abused their “privilege of authority...” The interaction between Dr. Murphy and the executives occurred at a U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means hearing on the role of health insurers and health care affordability.
Dr. Murphy has been a leading voice in Congress on Medicare and health insurance issues. He has led efforts to add a permanent, mandatory inflation adjustment to the Medicare physician fee schedule. He is currently the author of legislation to penalize health insurers who attempt to game the No Surprises Act Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) process by delaying and denying payment awards made by arbitrators to physicians and health care providers.
