Today, President Trump signed into law H.R. 7148, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, a major federal funding package. Among the provisions included in the package is a reauthorization of the ASA-endorsed Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act. H.R. 7148 extends the law’s effective date through September 2030 and ensures the continuation of federal efforts to address burnout, improve mental health, and strengthen suicide prevention resources for physicians and other health care professionals.
Originally enacted in 2022, the Dr. Lorna Breen Act established federal grants and initiatives to support evidence based strategies that improve clinician well being. The law focuses on reducing workplace stressors, expanding mental and behavioral health resources, and promoting best practices across health systems.
The Dr. Lorna Breen Act remains the only federal statute dedicated specifically to clinician mental health and suicide prevention. Reauthorization ensures continued support for hospitals, health systems, and training programs working to improve workforce well being.
