Culminating one of the primary requests made by attendees at LEGCON 2026, a bipartisan group of more than 100 lawmakers joined a formal request to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins urging the VA to preserve safe anesthesia care for our nation’s Veterans. The request marks the highest number of signatories on a communication to VA on this issue, and is the result of more than 225 meetings with lawmakers during LEGCON, in addition to individual district-level outreach by ASA members on this important patient safety issue.
The over 100 lawmakers request that VA take action now to uphold Directive 1123, which ensures that Veterans receive the same standard of care as civilians in their state. The record-high signature count demonstrates the support of legislators from across the country to affirm the importance of anesthesiologists in delivering safe, high-quality anesthesia care.
