Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe on July 13 signed House Bill 2372—landmark legislation that prohibits health plans and insurers from imposing arbitrary time limits on anesthesia coverage and payment. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Missouri Society of Anesthesiologists (MSA) supported the legislation, which prohibits health carriers and health benefit plans from establishing, implementing, or enforcing any policy that imposes a time limit for the payment of anesthesia services or excludes anesthesia time from payment calculations.
With this new law, Missouri joins a growing number of states taking action to prevent insurer interference in anesthesia care and protect patients from policies that could incentivize insurers to limit payment based on arbitrary time thresholds rather than clinical need.
ASA and the MSA applaud Governor Kehoe and Missouri lawmakers for prioritizing patient safety and preserving access to medically necessary anesthesia care. House Bill 2372 helps ensure that anesthesia services are paid based on the needs of the patient and the clinical judgment of anesthesia professionals—not insurer-imposed time restrictions that fail to account for the complexity and variability of modern surgical procedures.
