for Anesthesiology Residency Programs
Anesthesia Toolbox is an educational platform and learning community that enables anesthesiology departments and residency programs to create, peer review, and share educational resources. It provides high quality peer-reviewed educational resources to support both learners and instructors and has been collaboratively developed by leading anesthesia departments around the world.
Educational resources within Anesthesia Toolbox include e-learning modules, quiz questions, problem-based learning discussions, podcasts, lecture slides, online learning modules, simulation scripts, procedural skills training guides, competency assessments, and more.
The platform was originally built to help programs evolve to competency-based educational models using innovations like e-learning. Resource sharing among programs is common since there are limited financial and other resources available to create new educational material. Anesthesia Toolbox facilitates this on a broad scale, providing a business model and infrastructure to encourage educational collaboration between programs.
Customers currently include 102 anesthesiology departments and residency programs which subscribe to the platform for 12-month terms.
Glenn Woodworth, MD, founded Anesthesia Toolbox in 2014 and has served as its Executive Director and first Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Woodworth is currently the Associate Director of the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship and Professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
What is being announced?
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has acquired Anesthesia Toolbox from Oregon Health & Science University, as of November 16, 2021. This acquisition and transfer of management coincides with Dr. Woodworth’s desire to step back from daily management duties and ensure the product lives on and thrives in the trusted, mission-based organization of ASA.
The operational management of Anesthesia Toolbox will remain with OHSU until July 1, 2022, or until such time as ASA can assume operations.
Dr. Woodworth will assist ASA as needed during the transition. The current editorial staff, chaired by the current Editor-in-Chief Dr. Christina Spofford, will continue to direct the editorial management and content development of Anesthesia Toolbox.
Customers will not experience any day-to-day changes in how they access or engage with Anesthesia Toolbox through June 30th, 2021. In the short-term, ASA will be focused on maintaining a smooth transition and continued operation of the Toolbox. ASA will ultimately transfer the content, including the quiz bank--to a new technology platform to ensure long-term accessibility, improve the user experience, enable new features, and to expand the customer base. This will also facilitate the convenience of single sign-on for ASA members and customers.
Why has ASA acquired Anesthesia Toolbox?
ASA’s acquisition of Anesthesia Toolbox demonstrates the society’s commitment to educating and providing meaningful engagement for anesthesiology residents and anesthesiologists in their early career. It enables ASA to expand its education portfolio and help build lifelong learners. This initiative is directly aligned with ASA’s Educational Resources pillar, outlined in its strategic plan to strengthen educational strategies, materials, and opportunities.
